About Supporting Safer Communities

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, with unanimous support from the Board of County Commissioners, approved The Carrie Meek Foundation to distribute $7.3 million in grants through its Supporting Safer Communities Grant Program (SSC Program). The request for proposals seeks programs, projects and initiatives that build and strengthen Miami-Dade’s community-based response to gun violence. The SSC Program will prioritize the best solutions for achieving its goals: increase available resources to support impacted residents through anti-violence efforts; increase use of services that address the root causes of violence and help residents live thriving, productive lives; and mobilize more residents to engage with and amplify violence reduction efforts that build safer and supportive communities across Miami-Dade County.

Nonprofits, grassroots groups, residents, small neighborhood-based organizations, faith-based organizations, civic institutions, and other community-serving organizations are eligible to apply. Projects should improve quality of life and engage those at high-potential for involvement in gun violence, including re-entry support for those returning from incarceration, deploying high-risk violence interventionists, and providing mental health and survivor support services. The SSC Program will also support grassroots anti-violence projects that expand access to spaces, activities, services and relationships that develop children and youth. Funded programs will receive technical assistance and training support to ensure they are implemented well and positioned for future success.

The program is funded through a collaboration with Miami-Dade County Office of Neighborhood Safety’s Community Violence Intervention Initiative (CVI), a hyper-local, neighborhood-based effort to reduce gun violence and its impact on residents across the county.
