Miami-Dade County Commission Unanimously Supports, Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee’s Resolution to Award The Carrie Meek Foundation 8.9 Million Dollars For Community Violence Intervention Initiatives

(Miami, FL) The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution sponsored by District 9 Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee, to award The Carrie Meek Foundation funding to administer $8.9 million dollars for community-based violence intervention initiatives throughout Miami-Dade County. The Carrie Meek Foundation, in partnership with Miami-Dade County, will administer, manage, and disburse $8.9 million dollars over 3 years to non-profit organizations that will provide reentry services, high risk intervention work, mental health and victim outreach and support services. Additionally, a portion of the funding will be given to organizations that address career training, food scarcity, youth development, and capacity building.

“The Carrie Meek Foundation is uniquely positioned to implement the Community Violence Intervention Program,” said Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee. “The work they are currently doing with non-profits in Florida City, Opa-locka, and Liberty City is an effective model that can be replicated county wide to make real strides in reducing violence and strengthening communities,” he continued.

During a recent Board of County Commissioner’s meeting, community leaders, grass roots organizers and residents impacted by gun violence spoke in support of The Carrie Meek Foundation. Many shared sentiments of trust in the foundation as well as appreciation for its commitment to investing in the growth, development, and success of local organizations that aim to improve the quality of life for residents. Congresswoman Carrie Meek’s impact is felt in virtually every corner of Miami-Dade County. This broad reach is part of what uniquely positions The Carrie Meek Foundation to partner with Miami-Dade County to implement the Community Violence Intervention Program. There is an earned and inherent trust in the Congresswoman and all she stood for. That entrenched goodwill tends to open doors and inspires residents to participate in leadership initiatives supported by the Foundation.

“When you build equity into a program’s development and execution, you ensure that support gets to the people and places where it’s needed most,” said Lucia Davis-Raiford, President & CEO of The Carrie Meek Foundation. “Our work gives us deep understanding of our county’s challenges and where the most effective solutions might be found but are often overlooked: embedded within the communities and people who live there and whom have been most impacted by violence.”
