Congresswoman Meek’s advice to young people has always been to get as much education as they possibly can. In prior years, the Carrie Meek Foundation Scholarship Program reflected her recognition of education’s critical role in transforming impoverished urban neighborhoods. Scholarships extended educational options to low‐income families by providing parents up to $3,950 to send their child to the school of their choice. While innovative new education initiatives are under development, the foundation’s efforts to date have produced more than 1,200 Carrie Meek Scholars. The legacy also extends to higher education, with Meek’s longtime commitment to Miami Dade College honored in MDC’s Carrie Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center in Liberty City. The campus was recently authorized to offer a Bachelor in Applied Science degree in Public Safety through its School of Justice. Congresswoman Meek was also instrumental in making advanced aviation training programs available at Miami Dade College and Florida Memorial University. Through its ongoing efforts, the Foundation is continuing to build partnerships that create and expand educational opportunities.
